Why “Doing Sixteen”?
做十六是台灣少數仍保留的傳統成年儀式。
男孩、女孩在農曆七夕穿過「鳥母宮」，象徵走出守護神七娘媽與床母的庇佑，邁入獨立承擔責任的階段。
這不僅是一個儀式，更是向神明感恩、對父母盡孝，以及勇敢迎接未來的象徵。
“Doing Sixteen” (Zuò Shíliù) is one of Taiwan’s few surviving traditional coming-of-age ceremonies.
Every year on the Lunar Qixi Festival (also known as the Chinese Valentine’s Day), boys and girls walk through the Bird Mother Palace, marking the moment they step out from the care of their childhood guardian deities and take on the responsibilities of adulthood.
It’s a symbolic farewell to childhood, a heartfelt thanks to the gods and parents, and a public declaration: I’m ready for my future.

鳥母宮的傳說與成年秘密
「走出守護的懷抱」：
「鳥母宮」原名「姐母宮」，是語音轉稱，名稱源自民間信仰：
-
「姐」指三十六婆姐，由臨水夫人指派守護孩子平安成長；
-
「母」指床母，從孩子出生到十六歲成年禮，守護健康與安眠。
成年禮儀式中，孩子須由父母引領，手持的七娘媽亭之下踜過並環繞三圈。男孩稱為「出鳥母宮」，女孩稱為「出婆姐宮」，儀式結束時會將供酒澆在紙灰上，象徵撤去守護神的供奉，孩子正式離開庇護，開始獨立面對人生。
走出鳥母宮的那一刻，象徵孩子離開守護的懷抱，帶著父母與貴人的牽引，踏上屬於自己的成長之路，承擔家庭與社會的責任。
Niangma Temple was originally called Jie-Mu Temple. Its name comes from local folk beliefs:
-
“Jie” (Sisters) are the 36 Po Jie, deities who protect children’s safety;
-
“Mu” (Mother) is the Bed Mother, who watches over children’s health and sleep until they turn sixteen.
During the coming-of-age ceremony, children walk under the Qi Niang Ma Pavilion three times, led by their parents. Boys are said to “exit Niangma Temple”, and girls “exit Po Jie Temple.” At the end, wine is poured onto paper ashes, showing that the gods’ protection is removed, and the child is now independent.
Stepping out of Niangma Temple marks leaving the protective embrace behind, ready to start their own journey and take on responsibilities in life.

– The 9.5-Meter Bird Mother Palace Built by the People of Anping
“A Towering Marvel

2001年，安平地方人士齊心協力，打造高達9.5公尺、重達15噸的巨型木構鳥母宮，六角造型呼應安平的「六角頭」文化，屋頂結合鳥巢、燕尾、漁船龍骨等意象，每年七夕搭建、七月十五拆卸，成為安平獨特的文化地標與成年禮核心舞台。
in2001, Anping’s residents joined forces to create a giant wooden Bird Mother Palace—9.5 meters tall, 15 tons in weight.
Its hexagonal shape honors Anping’s “Six Corners” heritage, while its roof design blends bird nests, swallow-tail roofs, and fishing boat keels.
This massive temple is built fresh each Qixi and taken down after the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, making it both a cultural landmark and the centerpiece of the coming-of-age ceremony.
